Hodgepodge

Hodgepodge day... yahoo!!!

1. Share something you appreciate (or something you appreciated as you were growing up) about your mother.

I appreciated that my mom was always up for a game... always up for fun.  Its why friends loved hanging out at my house.  My mom always had a board game or card game ready to play... I remember even during the days on summer break, when game shows were a big thing.  Me & her would sit & watch them together & yell answers at the TV.  It was so much fun... made me the awesome game player I am today by the way :)

My mom really was a cool mom

2.  A quote most commonly ascribed to Plato reads-"Necessity is the mother of invention." When did this last play out in your own experience?

This question just makes my brain hurt....

stupidity

3. Share one of the earliest memories you have from childhood.

I can remember going to the nursery/kindergarten  that my aunt owned & my grandmother used to work at.  For me, I didn't have to go because my mom stayed at home to take care of us, but I always loved to go because I had the 'in' ... with my family owning it, all the teachers there knew who I was & they spoiled me.  They were the best.  I remember when my grandmother passed away in 1997, I saw so many of them at her funeral. They were amazing women.  But it was the coolest because during 'nap time' - my grandmother would take me over to the local 5 & dime store & we'd buy candy... always watermelon Jolly Ranchers for me...  fun memories of being young.  Fun memories of feeling special.

Me with Teenie & my Joe-Cool Brother & our dog Dolly

4. When did you last 'hit the mother lode'? What was it?

I hit the mother lode in something I didn't want...

Why - WHYYYY???? do the people at Subway have to squirt a whole bottle of mustard on a sandwich?  Even when I ask for just a "LITTLE" bit...

So yeah... when mustard squirts out from all sides of a sandwich & on my shirt & on my hands & on my face & on my pants... yeah... mother lode of mustard.

How I feel when they're squirting mustard on my sandwich

Thanks Subway employees.

5. What is/was your favorite dish mom made? Do you make that dish for your family/friends now that you're all grown up?
I always loved my mom's chili... of course, that's when I ate meat.  It was the best!  Especially in winter.  & the big dish that we looked forward to was her lasagna. It would put Olive Garden to shame.

Do I make those dishes now?  ... hahahaaahhahahaaahhahaa....I'm not a good cook... let's just leave it at that.

6. Mother May I? was at one time a popular children's game. It required no equipment or parts to play. What was your favorite childhood game to play where you could just turn up and play-no gear needed?

Who didn't love a good game of hide & seek?  Especially when it took up half a block.  I was awful at catching people... see? Always have been a slow runner!  But I was pretty good at sneaking & hiding & slipping out at the right moment to run to home base!  Ahh - good times!

How I'd be when I made it to home base SAFE! :)

7. Which TV mom (past or present) is your favorite, and why?

Right now, I'm so loving Beverly Goldberg...

Gotta be Aqua Net

Probably because she's from the 80's... & plus, she reminds me so much of my mom.  A take charge, 'ain't no body messing with my babies' kinda mom. She's awesome.  & who doesn't love that hair!  Come on!  RADICAL! (how long has it been since you heard THAT word?)

8.  Insert your own random thought here.

Have you seen this yet?  Pretty cute...

By the way - Happy Hour on Frappuccino's are still gong on this week so I'll go with you .... between 3 & 5 :)

  1. that last clip was cute!

My favorite game as a kid was Hop scotch. Growing up in the desert you could always create a game with your foot in the dirt where ever you were...and my brother was really bad at it so I could always beat him!!! :)

  2. Yes ma'am, let's go to Starbucks! I loved reading this, made me think back too. My fave dish my mom made was tacos, my mom used to fry soft tortillas, not healthy but seriously delicious!

  3. Do you know that I've never watched "The Goldberg's"? No sure why, either. I know, I know...what is wrong with me? My dad was always up for a game of Trivial Pursuit and would come out victorious every single time! :)

  4. I love what you said about your mom. I want to be remembered or spoken about by my (future) kids like that one day. As a fun mom who was always up for anything!

  5. The people at Subway are the WORST at mustard/mayo application! I gave up on telling them I want it on my sandwich and now just apply it myself. They have condiment packets by the drinks!

  7. I hear ya on the Subway condiments. I say 'just the tiniest little bit of honey mustard' and the guy behind the counter goes crazy with that squeeze bottle.

To play stautes-someone was the designated shopper and someone the store clerk. Everyone else would spin and bend and pose and twist until the clerk shouted freeze. Then the clerk would bring the shopper over to you and explain what sort of statue you were. You couldn't move. The shopper would pick the best one. Kinda lame when I see it in writing, but it was fun to a 9 year old : )
