Sad. That's the book summed up in one word. I honestly am not a historical book person but this story was interesting to me hearing the way people lived in the Great Plains. We think we have environmental issues? Wow.... But I really ended up enjoying the historical side of story & may try more books like this.
I really enjoyed the book up till the last 150 pages. It took a strange turn for me when it started getting more political instead of focusing on Elsa & her family & her relationship with her kids & the fight she was having to provide for them. I read the author notes at the end, explaining why she wrote it & I could see her point on some areas... I just wish it went another direction.
I closed the book very heavy hearted & sad... there's no "good, rainbow, sunshine" feeling with this one at all.

Quick Summary: A woman who is a recluse & spies on the neighborhood has issues with her medicine & alcohol & when they mix & she sees a murder happen to someone that she's now being told doesnt exist, what is real & what isn't
I know this book has been out for awhile & I am so glad I finally got around to it because it totally held my attention. I was pretty good at figuring out some of the mystery but I still had a pretty good twist & turn that took me by surprise. That always makes me excited when a book gives me an Ah-HA moment.
This wasn't too complicated & I enjoy a book that has really short chapters in it - it makes me feel like I read more because if I see a chapter is just a few pages, I'll go ahead & read further - & so on & so on. Just my style of reading. It helped me zoom through this one.

The Lost Apothecary

Quick Summary: Two story lines - centuries apart. / Nella is an Apothecary that dispurses poison for women to rid them of harmful men in their lives. & in present day, Caroline stumbles across a vile in a river while going on her anniversary trip alone as she figures out her marriage & discovers the story of what happened back in the 1800's
I wasn't sure I was going to like this when I picked it for my Book of the Month pick - but man, I just really enjoyed it. I was going back & forth between 4 stars & 5 - I hold out on my 5 stars - but I really just enjoyed this story. It was interesting to me to hear the story of women back in the late 1700's & just the idea of the story was intriguing to me. I loved how they tired it to the current day with Caroline. It had very "Romeo & Juliet" feels - just those bad timing, horrible coincidence moments.
I wish I had a LITTLE bit more information on the end - like How? (if you read the book, you'll know what i'm talking about) - but I'm still happy with the ending. Gave me some pumping my fists in the air moments. I was here for it.
