You all know I so enjoy doing that... it involves TALKING after all.... I do love to talk...
Last night, I was feeling funny about it because guess what the topic was on? Not sex, or addiction, or peer pressure, or parents or friendships... I can handle any of those... nope...the topic last night was on...
...MONEY...
I always hear Pastors say how much they hate to talk about money even to "big church" - adults... imagine talking about it to kids who pretty much will tell you, "I have no money so this doesnt even matter to me."
But I tried to let them know that in life, money WILL follow them. Afterall, those first cars are coming - which includes gas - which today's world means LOTS of money needed. Then there's prom, college, apartments, weddings, houses, families... we never get away from the need for money...
Jesus says we cant serve both God & money... so even if these kids dont have what they consider to be lots of money, they can still try & grab the fact that they can set standards & priorities now for when they hit these things down the road. Where will their trust & faith lie? In money or more in God?
The funny thing - we totally put all our faith & trust in God when we die. That last breath we take on this earth, we have total trust that we will be in Heaven, with Jesus, worshipping our Heavenly Father. Its not so much though that we have this overwhelming, Mother Teresa, amazing faith... its really because we have no other choice... we have no control over the situation... we HAVE to TRUST God.
But we dont put that kind of trust in God while we're here on earth... why? Because we like to control things...
So doesnt it make sense that the God, who we trust with our ETERNITY, would want to see how much we trust Him on earth, with the thing that we, most of times, put most of our faith & trust in... money...
I know it was a rough lesson for the kids... I tried to make it more interesting with side stories & even brought in weapons from my good ole Kung-Fu days... but I just pray that the heart of the message got across.
Money... its a tricky topic...
Yes, I would definitely have to agree that it is, but I'm sure you nailed the message perfectly!
ReplyDeleteSuch a sensitive topic, too. It's never too soon to start discussing it, though. I don't let my kids get worried about our money, but I do use a lot of teachable moments to make sure they know where the money comes from and how Joe and I handle it. Hoping they learn from our mistakes when we were young...
ReplyDeleteYep, it's a toughy speaking to adults, sometimes even co-workers and I work at a Christian school. Some people just cannot grasp the concept. At least the teens that attended last night got a Godly perspective on money.
ReplyDeleteYes, happens...
