Heavy on the roots...

I had posted on Facebook the other day how my sunflower fell over.  It was like the beanstalk that the giant was climbing down from "Jack & the Beanstalk"... it was HUGE!

And this wasnt one that we planted.  It was one that just sorta grew in the middle of our flower bed from dropped sunflower seeds last season.

It pulled the roots out of the ground & I could see the leaves slowly dying from the bottom up...

So I did what I felt like would help - I cut the blooms off...

... stuck them in a bucket of water...

& some of the blooms, I actually put in vases in my house.  I was gonna enjoy the beauty of them somehow

... So even though they didnt get to get big & bright like they usually do, I still enjoyed the beauty of my flowers...

...& for the record - this morning, I walked out & the stalk that is still laying on its side - get this! - there are about 10 blooms that just came up on the side of it & starting to open!  I think me cutting off those big blooms & getting some of the weight off it, it let the roots not pull completely up.  I'm gonna get some more lovelies afterall!  YIPEE!!!!

Made me think about my life...

...sometimes I have to get rid of the things that weigh me down - things that pull my roots out of the foundation that I need to grow.  Even things that I think are beautiful & lovely - things that I enjoy.

And I'm also reminded that I serve an amazing God, who is a God full of second chances... & in those second chances, there is more growth that is more beautiful then before...

Anything in your life weighing you down?  Pulling your roots out of the ground & causing parts of you to slowly die?  Maybe its time to cut them off & get those roots planted deep again...

The seeds that fell on rocky ground are the people who gladly hear the message and accept it right away. But they don't have deep roots, and they don't last very long. As soon as life gets hard or the message gets them in trouble, they give up.
-Matthew 13:20-21 (CEV)

Behold, happy is the man whom God corrects;
Therefore do not despise the chastening of the Almighty.
For He bruises, but He binds up;
He wounds, but His hands make whole"
-Job 5:17-18 (NKJV)

  1. People think I'm deeply rooted, but sometimes I feel less anchored than I should be.

    Thanks for this reminder to dig down.

  4. Haha, Mark :)

    I wish I could prune school out of my life...but I can't. 7 more months, 2 more quarters (repeat to self as often as needed).

    Our sunflowers aren't as tall this year; I think Gabe picked out some dwarf kind. Still pretty, though.
