Training - Day 1

August 8th...

I've been looking forward to that date for awhile now.  At least since May .... that's a few months back...

What's so special about August 8th?  It's an ordinary day for most people.  But for me, its 14 weeks to the next half marathon I'm running in November.  August 8th was the start of my next round of training.... & I was giddy & excited about it... how weird is that?

After my last half in April, I immediately registered for 2 more races in the fall.  (A half marathon in November & a quarter marathon in October) I just love to have a goal, something to put my sights on.  I had heard so much positive feedback on the book "Marathoning for Mortals" on Daily Mile so I picked up the book, read it in like 2 days (its a great guide for running) & got a calendar & started counting back the days that would be my first training day.

Now, since April, I have still kept on running.  I just do my own thing really.  Its just what I feel like doing.  I want to just do 3 miles?  Fine.  Feel like pushing myself further - well, that's OK too.  Want to just skip the workout for the day because I just dont want to do it?  Why not?....  there's just been no structure.

I guess that's why I love the idea of finally getting in 'training mode' - there's a schedule - a point to it all.  There is a build up in strength & intensity & distance that makes my body specificially ready for 13.1 miles.  Its not just an 'I feel like it' kinda thing.  I wont be standing at that starting line & thinking, 'I only feel like doing 5 miles today'. Its a plan of knowing I will finish 13.1 at the end of that day.

But it was funny because I was looking at my calendar for the week & all the training that I have written down & my Siesta Memory verse from May came back to mind:

Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize?  Run in such a way as to get the prize.  EVERYONE WHO COMPETES IN THE GAME GOES INTO STRICT TRAINING.  They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever
-1 Corinthians 9:24-25

Strict training... a plan... something to get the body & mind & spirit ready for what lies ahead...

Isnt it cool that every day can be our day to start 'training' in God's Word.  That we can prepare our hearts, body & soul for what lies ahead in life.  All the rough parts of the race of life?  Isnt it cool that there is point to it all in training with God?  We shouldnt do the whole idea of "what we want" in this area of our lives.... He wants structure that keeps us focused on the finish line.

Anyone else ready to start training today?

  3. I am adverse to any type of strict training. It makes me run the other way. I admire that you are going for it!!!!
