Going solo....

Counting down....

2 more days & then I'm on vacation!!!!

& of course, this is how I'm feeling...

... but it only takes a hot second & my emotions go to this...

Why?

Because this isn't going to be like my normal vacation.  I'm going to be taking this one solo.

Now, for the past 21 years, Ricky & I have taken off the week of our anniversary for our vacation. It's a given.  Something we have done since I became a Mrs.  The end of October, you'll find us looking forward to those glorious 5 days away from work.

But this year, Ricky had to take time off to have a hernia surgery using up all his time.
So no vacation for him.

I guess I should look at it in a grateful way by knowing that in 20 years, neither one of us has had to use our vacation for anything serious that has popped up in life.  That's one way to look at it.

... but I feel a little lost.

What do I do?

Of course, I fully intend to sleep in.  That's a given. Duh!

& of course, I'll spend some time catching up on some DVR shows I've got going on...

& maybe finish up Gilmore Girls

& I could clean out my closets. This is a good time to make that change from summer clothes to winter clothes, even though its near 90 degrees today (WHAT IS HAPPENING???)
& I do like to be alone when I'm trying on a hundred different pieces of clothing that makes me rethink joining a nudist colony.
Let me correct that - THINK about it - not RETHINK. It's not something I have thought about before.

& maybe I'll go for a manicure & pedicure.
Fun fact - I've never had a pedicure in my life.  Don't know why. Just never have had one in my life. My twin nieces even get them regularly.  Like, they started getting them before double digits in the age category.  I'm 44 & never had one. How has that happen?

& every vacation, we usually go to the Outlet mall so I can get a new pair of running shoes.  Maybe I'll drive out there & pick out a pair anyways

... on my own...

I'm so bummed out.

I'm even more bummed out that Ricky doesn't get off.  He works so hard & deserves some time off.

& I'm especially bummed that next Friday is our 21st wedding anniversary...
& we won't get to be together the whole day like we've always done.
Cue the sad eyes again.

maybe I can make a picnic & take down to Ricky's work for lunch.

What else do I have to do?

Any fun ideas to do for myself for a solo vacation?
... give me some ideas.

  1. Treat yourself to a pedi and some shopping! He will still be home in the evening, right? Perhaps you spend your free time during the day to make fun plans when he comes home? How about preparing a gourmet meal one night?

  2. Aww... that's a mixed bag. Yay vacation but boo for Ricky not being with you. The idea of taking him a picnic for lunch sounds great! Also, is there stuff in your town that you've always meant to do but haven't had time for? I love staycations for things like that and checking out the tourist sites that I don't usually get to do.

  3. Awwww. That's a pretty dark cloud hanging over your vacation time :( Maybe you can plan a few low-energy intentional even dates/time together! A game one night, a movie together one night, ice cream sundays one night? Definitely treat yourself, though! Mani-pedis, some new shoes, maybe a new book? And lots of Starbucks!

  4. I'm sorry that Ricky won't get to the spend the week with you :( that definitely is a bummer. The only thing I can think to do is definitely treat yourself next week to feel, at least, a little better?

  6. That totally sucks that your hubby can't take the time off as well. I think you should treat yourself to something, it could be a day at the spa or a little retail therapy.

  7. Oh man ... you definitely need to take a day (or two or three) to take care of yourself first. Starbucks, bookstore, yarn store, etc. but definitely a picnic lunch on your anniversary! I've never had a pedicure either ... but then again I have ugly baby toes that no amount of pampering could improve. :) Whatever you decide to do, TREAT YO'SELF and enjoy the time off! :)

  8. Sounds like the perfect week to practice self care! I hope you are able to spend some quality time with your husband during the week and figure out a way to celebrate your anniversary even if you can't be together the whole day!

  9. I say relish in your alone time instead of being sad about it! You can get time to do some stuff that you have been meaning to get around to (like Netflix binges and closet purges) but make sure you do some things for you too...like a day of shopping or a pampering day!

  10. You have to get a pedi! It's just so fun to pamper yourself and relax for a bit. Happy Anniversary and you MUST finish Gilmore Girls before it comes back out next month!

  11. ohhhh :( BOO. this sucks so bad, especially since it is something you've been doing for so long. i hope you're able to enjoy it, and try and do something fun with the time you do have together. and do a really big trip next year ;)

  12. Aw such a bummer that you all won't be vacationing together, but sometimes it's nice to have that "me" time. Enjoy sleeping in and watching gilmore girls! :)

  13. Aww, I'm so sorry y'all can't take vacation together this year. The best advice I was given when we started this medical journey is celebrations can be moved! You can pretend your anniversary is actually Saturday and spend the whole day together then! It's made all the difference for me. Last year, Chris had to work on Thanksgiving, and at first it was a struggle for me, but we just moved Thanksgiving to another date and had the best time! :)

  14. Hope you decide on that pedicure! I haven't had one in years. I suggest a facial at a local day spa. I LOVE getting a facial. It is more relaxing to me than a massage (which can really hurt!). I think a picnic for lunch with your sweetie is a great idea! You can make it work.

  15. I probably had my first pedicure at around 44. I enjoyed it, but just like getting my hair cut, I just hate taking the time to do it.

I would LOVE to spend a staycation at home while Mike went to work! I like having the house to myself - & now that he's not working those times are VERY rare. Ha!

  16. I've had one pedicure - and I didn't like it. 1 because I had a toenail that was dead // dying & in process of falling off & the lady was rude about it & made fun of me. Which, super unprofessional. Also, they didn't want to cut my nails as short as I usually keep them, which, I keep them that short so I don't get cut up when I run.

I really enjoy trying out new coffee shops. Little local ones. Getting a baked good & a coffee. I usually am inspired to write too since I'm in a new space. + COFFEE. Usually they have unique drinks too. Like extra festive holiday ones.

  17. Oh bummer, friend! I'm so sorry, I would feel the same way. KC and I spend most of our time together, and I always get a bit grumpy and sad when we have too many days or nights apart. I hope you find ways to make lots of time together or do nice things for each other when you aren't together. Maybe you could surprise him with something new each day? I don't know but I hope you are able to make the most of it! :) Xo - Alexandra

  18. The picnic idea would be fun for both of you, or if you have any time that day at all (morning or evening), you could try and fit something in, like a breakfast date or a long walk.

You know, it's funny that you wrote this post now, because I was literally just talking to my husband about what he would do if he had a whole day or weekend to himself without me or our daughter around---if he just had a whole lotta solo time (which, let's face it, never really happens much for either of us).

The idea had come up because a small part of me kind of missed solo time---I adore being a mom and wife, but sometimes, I want a quiet afternoon with nothing to worry about but myself. And while it may sound selfish, it isn't meant to be---it just is meant to say that I enjoy solitude now a lot more than I used to.

Also, I used to have my spring break off when my husband didn't (when I was a teacher and he was a university student), and I used those days to take long runs, catch up on cleaning the apartment, watch some cheesy chick flicks, and maybe try out a new bakery or two. Yeah, it definitely wasn't as exciting as a real vacation with another human being would have been, but it kind of had a magic all of its own.

Anyway, hope you find something fun to do, both solo AND on your anniversary!

  19. I've never had a pedicure either and I'm 30. I've had my nails done, but it's been about 12 years. I just don't want to spend my money on things like that. I'd rather spend it on food haha. Maybe spend the whole day binge watching some shows and ordering some delivery or take out!

  20. I've never had a pedicure or a manicure.

So sorry that your hubby can't be off too. A picnic with hubby on your anniversary sounds like a good plan. Hope you enjoy your time off.

  21. That's really too bad, I'm sure you must be disappointed. I've had a couple pedicures, but did not enjoy them at all. I will never get another one!
If you go to the outlet mall, call me and I'll meet you there!! (Well, if it's in the evening)

  22. Honestly, I think all of your ideas of things to do for yourself are great. I think with Neil and I working together, I would cherish a week solo. ha! Maybe do a few little unexpected surprise things for him everyday to show him that even though he's not off work, you're still cherishing & celebrating this anniversary week? One morning, get up and serve him breakfast in bed. Or have his favorite dinner ready in the evening. Or be all dolled up to take him out to dinner when he gets home one night. Or, yes to the picnic for work lunch.
